How to Rank a Blog on Google’s First Page

How do you get traffic to your website?

Search engine optimization (SEO) should be a top priority if you’re counting on people finding you through Google.

Lead generation for your company will be impossible if nobody can find you.

Do search engines account for 93% of all experiences on the Internet? In the event, a search is performed, what happens?

Search results with the highest clickthrough rates have a 33% chance of being clicked.

In other words, if you’re not on the first page, you just missed out on a third of possible traffic.

The second page of search results isn’t even clicked by 75% of people.

There is a reason why your competitor’s website appears higher in Google because they are improving their search engine optimization.

As a result, you have time left to start.

In order to get ranked higher on Google searches, there are a few things you can do.

Would you like 10,000 people, or even more?

Many websites do achieve these numbers, but if you’re going to reach these numbers, then your blog must rank in Google’s top 10 search results.

What Does “Ranking on Google” Mean?

Getting your blog listed on Google simply means having your site appear when someone searches for a term or question. Getting a great deal of traffic to your website through this effort is a fundamental goal for most website owners

However, there’s a catch.

Have you ever made it to page two or three of Google’s results? Even when you reach page two, how often do you stay?

It is imperative to rank in the top 10 results (which are the ones found on page one) because page two results receive just a fraction of a percent click-through rate. There are very few people who see your listing in search results if your blog is not among the top 10. Even fewer clicks on your website if your listing does not rank in the top 10.

1. Boost loading speed for your website

There are a few reasons why your page loading time is important.

A slow load speed will be recognized by search engines, and this will negatively impact your ranking.

The speed of your website may also impact the way your visitors interact with the pages.

Thus, your ranking will also be affected by these negative interactions.

When a website’s loading time is long, abandonment rates increase:

At what point does too slow become too slow?

Researchers have found that 40% of visitors abandon a website if it takes longer than three seconds to load.

80% of those visitors will never come back to that website, which is even more shocking.

As a result, you’ll lose traffic to your site, which is terrible for SEO rankings.

As a consequence, if your site loads fast, people are likely to return.

You will see a difference in your search ranking as Google’s algorithm determines the popularity of your site.

Therefore, both your server response time and page speed should be optimized.

Pingdom is a free service that can be used to test the speed of your website.

Your website can be tested at various locations all over the world.

2. Create high-quality content

What is the frequency of your website updates?

You probably don’t have a high SEO ranking right now if you haven’t updated your site since you built it.

In order to increase traffic and popularity on your website, you need to give visitors a reason to return.

A relevant, high-quality, and recent piece of content is essential.

You also need to consider dwell time when calculating SEO rankings.

Visits to your website are correlated with how much time visitors spend on them.

Your site will have better dwell times and more visitors if your content is fresh, exciting, or newsworthy.

The dwell time on websites with highly informative content is usually very long.

Create one place where you can keep your content ideas across all your document apps.

Another point to think about.

The most popular browser in the world is Google Chrome, which has nearly 65.3% of the global market share.

Visitors are more likely to bookmark your website if it contains relevant and high-quality content.

3. Optimize your images

Your website would benefit from pictures and other images.

When it comes to optimizing your images for SEO, you must make sure that they are properly sized and formatted.

File format and size are factors that I am referring to.

Your ranking suffers when your page loads slowly because of huge images.

Optimize your images by resizing or compressing them.

By naming them appropriately, you can also sneak in keywords in your images.

You might, for example, sell toiletries and other bath products on your website.

An image can be named better than “shampoo1” if it is labeled “best shampoo for long hair.”

Use keywords strategically in the title, caption, and description of your image.

4. Add header tags to your content to break it up

An additional way to improve your site’s user experience is by using headings.

Reading and skimming the content becomes easier when the content is broken up.

A header makes all of the text look more appealing, which is always a good thing.

Your website will discourage people from spending a lot of time on it if it is just a wall of text.

Consequently, you will lose your SEO ranking.

Your WordPress site’s headers can easily be changed if it is run on the platform.

Header tags are used on all my websites and blog posts.

Using this tool is something everyone should do if they haven’t yet.

5. Start blogging

Blogging is a great marketing tool for businesses.

You can use it to generate leads and get in touch with visitors to your website using this tool.

Bloggers improve their SEO rankings, which most don’t realize.

I’ll tell you why.

In addition to creating timely, relevant, and updated content, you can entice visitors to stay on your website for longer.

You can accomplish this by using blogs.

Your site can get a lot of traffic on a daily basis if you build up a large base of faithful readers.

In addition to images, you can also incorporate header tags, which we discussed so far.

In addition to incorporating links, keywords, and readability, these articles can also include other elements. Those topics will be covered shortly.

Search engine ranking is positively impacted by all of this.

6. Use outbound links

If you want to make your site more credible, you can do certain things.

If you can back up your claims, that looks much better.

Credible and authoritative sources should be cited for all data claims.

Throughout today, you’ve seen that I do this myself.

In a blog post that I wrote about generating leads on Twitter, here’s another example that illustrates what I’m talking about:

Citation of authority sources is my only source for all facts.

To link to those websites, I included outbound hyperlinks.

The information you link to should not only be authoritative, but it should also be recent.

I used a graph from 2021 in the example above.

Your SEO ranking will suffer if you link to dated resources.

Links to internal pages should also be included.

Your website visitors will be directed here from these links.

It was my first sentence in this section that used this technique.

You can choose the link and move forward to another Quick Sprout blog post if you scroll back up and click on it.

7. Add more than text

There should be more than just written words on your website.

Additionally, pictures can improve your SEO ranking too, but there is more that you can do to boost it.

Make your site more multimedia-friendly by adding videos, slide shows, and audio.

The user experience can be improved by all of this.

Exactly why?

The consumer wants to see more videos to begin with:

The best way to learn something is to watch it.

The ranking of your website depends directly on the videos and other multimedia on your site.

By adding these features to your website, you can improve the amount of time someone spends on it.

People could spend several minutes on your page depending on the length of your videos.

If that occurs, it will boost your search engine ranking.

8. Make sure your website is readable

When writing content for your website, keep your audience in mind.

Make your site as easy to understand as possible if you want people to stay on it.

If you’re a lawyer, or a doctor (even if you are one), don’t sound like one.

It is important to write your content in a way that is understood by most people.

It can be helpful to use tools like this to identify words that are too long or difficult for people to understand.

9. Fix any broken links

Linking to authority websites shouldn’t cause links to break, as long as you use authority websites as a link source.

However, it is still possible.

Your SEO ranking can be ruined by broken links.

Additionally, it looks bad when you link to an invalid website when you provide it to your visitors.

Checking your website for dead links with tools like Ahref’s Broken Link Checker is a good idea:

The tool can be used to check your entire website or specific pages.

In addition, you can configure your account to automatically be checked if you sign up.

You will be notified right away if a link goes dead so you can replace it.

Monitoring other websites related to your industry can also be done with this resource.

Can that help your search engine optimization?

It is possible to request a link from a webmaster of another website if, for example, the link stops working on that website.

By informing them of a problem, you are doing them a favor, and in return, they may be willing to do you a favor.

Increasing your website traffic will result in increased sales. Your SEO ranking will be also improved by outbound links from other websites.

10. Optimize your site for mobile devices

It’s no secret that mobile devices are becoming more popular.

It has overtaken computers and laptops so fast that it’s actually overtaking them.

According to Google, over 60% of searches are conducted from mobile devices.

Sites that comply with this are obviously ranked higher.

Mobile users need to be able to access your website.

This can’t be avoided.

A badly optimized site will adversely affect your rankings because it will adversely affect the user experience.

11. Properly format your page

Layout your website carefully when developing a design.

Organize it well, keep it tidy, and keep it uncluttered.

Type size and font type should be taken into account.

Don’t overload your text with color, bold, or italics.

You can make your content easy to scan by using bullet points and checklists.

Let’s look at an example from Square:

It’s very clean.

Generally speaking, their pictures are simple and their text is reasonable.

People can easily read the formatted text thanks to the bullet points.

Square also incorporated different headers and subheadings onto their page, as is evident from the screenshot.

Having too many pictures, advertisements, colors, and blocks of text on your website can make it appear untrustworthy.

Also included here are your website’s architecture and navigation.

Optimizing your SEO ranking begins with a clean layout and design.

12. Provide appropriate contact information

Have you ever found it difficult to find contact information for a business on a website due to it appearing untrustworthy?

There is no doubt in my mind.

It shouldn’t happen like this.

Please make sure your contact information is clearly visible so anyone can easily find it.

Including your phone number, email address, and location is the worst thing that could happen to your site.

This will kill your SEO.

13. Encourage sharing on social media

Social media is essential for every business and website.

Almost everyone knows that.

But what’s less well known is that people sharing links to your website on social media can help you improve your SEO ranking.

The following example comes from a website case study where the campaign specifically targeted social sharing:

The infographic was shared 2,857 times in just two weeks.

During those same two weeks, the website’s organic search traffic rose by 15%.

As a result, their SEO ranking improved as well.

And that was just over a couple of weeks.

Imagine the results you’ll see if you encourage social sharing as a regular part of your SEO campaigns.

One of the best ways to do this is by including social sharing icons on all your content.

You should also share links on your social media pages.

When that information appears on people’s timelines, all it takes is just one click for them to share it.

14. Use keywords

Take a look at the components of the Google ranking algorithm:

Keywords are a major component in this formula.

Make sure your content includes search terms people will be looking for.

However, do it sparingly.

Using too many keywords on your website will cause Google to pick up on it, and you will suffer a ranking penalty.

It is important to incorporate keywords into sentences naturally.

You can even put them in image captions or header tags.

Also consider using long-tail keywords, which are phrases of three or four words that could appear in a search.

It’s unlikely, for instance, that someone would find something by searching the word “phone”.

However, they could also type “best phone for texting” in the search bar.

By using keywords that match their search, you will increase the likelihood of your website ranking higher.

15. Write click-worthy titles and descriptions

First of all, know that you have 65 characters for the headline in your search engine title.

It doesn’t matter how great your headline is, if it’s longer than 65 characters, it will be cut off. Here’s what you’ll see:

Fortunately, the headline’s most crucial part is retained, but the remainder has been removed. So keep it short.

You should also consider the following tips when creating click-worthy titles:

  • Front-load your titles with keywords – All your keyword phrases should be placed in your titles. Typically, people will scan titles for only two words.
  • Keep it predictable – Make sure the title links to a page that is visually appealing and meets the user’s expectations.
  • Clear – Your reader should be able to understand what your page is about in just 65 characters.
  • Make it emotional –

16. Create clean, focused, and optimized URLs

You don’t need to include emotional triggers in your URL but in your title tag. Let me explain.

Dan Shure used the following example:

There is no need for it to do this since it is ranking for only “digital marketing.”

What changes might you make to the title tag to improve its optimization? In my opinion, it should be called “Digital Marketing: 2015 Rule Book.”. Change or Perish.”

In this way, both keywords will be moved forward.

17. Write a great meta description

Meta descriptions are the next element that must be optimized.

Viewing the source code, you can see the tag as follows:

 

You’ll see this form at the bottom of your blog editor if you use a plugin like All-in-One SEO Pack.

With Google’s descriptions tips, you can create good descriptions easily. Here are two of the most important:

  • Make them descriptive – Ensure the article is loaded with relevant keywords. “Who?” is a formula you may enjoy. What? Why? When? Where? How? Reporters use that formula when they report. The technique is equally effective when writing descriptions.
  • Make them unique – Different meta descriptions should be used for different pages.
  • Make them short – The Google algorithm limits meta descriptions to 160 characters.

Despite the fact that meta descriptions, unlike headings, don’t seem to get clicks nearly as much as headings, they are still important for SEO ranking. Please do not ignore it!

18. Create a mobile app

It might seem crazy, but your SEO needs can be boosted by developing a mobile app.

The investment may be expensive, but this is also a wise option.

What exactly can an app do to boost your search engine optimization? As of now, Google search allows users to search for apps using Firebase App Indexing.

You can rank well for keywords in your niche when people search for them, and that contributes to your search engine optimization.

On the first page of Google, you will find an app when you search “reserve a restaurant”:

A Google search resulting in your app automatically makes it a valuable resource.

However, back to the main point. Google’s ranking app provides various benefits to users. Even though it’s costly, it’s so worth it.

19. Use latent semantic indexing (LSI)

Although latent semantic indexing (LSI) has many advantages, it is not widely used. LSI can bolster your site’s SEO, and it’s a shame because this technique is extremely practical.

As well as your main keywords, search engines will find related keywords as part of their LSI process. An LSI algorithm finds keywords that have synonyms.

A good LSI keyword for an article about Facebook would be “social media network.”

Here is what LSI looks like in action. You are likely to see this TechRadar blog post if you search for “buy new laptop”:

The page’s keywords are “best laptops” and “best tablets”.

As you can see, there are other keywords and phrases, such as “budget” and “affordable.” It comes up as the number one result when searching for “budget laptop” and “affordable laptop.”

LSI is a great way to improve your SEO, as demonstrated in this article. You’ll be surprised at how effective it can be when you test it out.

20. Sniff out unnecessary code

Having too much code is bad, but you know what they say about good things being too much.

A code-heavy site will take longer for search engines to crawl, which is bad. The most common offenders here are on-page JavaScript and CSS.

Whenever possible, you should write lightweight code. You will also improve your page loading speed, which can improve your search engine optimization.

21. Join question-and-answer sites

Knowledge is in high demand. Q&A websites such as Quora and Yahoo! Answers are increasingly common because people post their questions there.

However, there don’t seem to be many answers. You’re the one who can help there.

Answering someone’s question thoroughly and well should be your goal, preferably one with few answers. Include links to your site when relevant and write the best answer you can. (Please don’t become spammy here!)

Doing so accomplishes two tasks simultaneously. First of all, you’re helping the person who asked. Secondly, your links will be seen by countless people due to the attention you’re getting. Having your links prominently displayed will lead to people seeing you as a valuable resource and clicking on your links more often.

22. Use infographics

Information graphics is a powerful SEO tool. Kissmetrics generated a total of 2,012 posts and 41,142 backlinks with infographics. Information graphics are still flourishing at our company.

The two things you need for your infographics to succeed are a great design and excellent content. Creating infographics shouldn’t be done without considering the content. People do it all the time, and guess what? There are some problems with their infographics.

A high-quality infographic should also be accompanied by at least 2,000 words of content. This is because Google cannot take into account the text on the actual infographic, so if you write longer content, you’ll have an extra edge in search engine results.

I’ll leave you with one last trick for infographics. Get them moving!

This cheetah infographic really caught my attention. There’s nothing cool about the data. Data and visualizations are arranged in the graphic according to their movement.

Which concept did you think worked best? 1,170 websites link to it. For one infographic, it’s not bad.

23. Get some press

Since my sites lacked links from authority sites, I had to manually build links when I first got into SEO, and I would take months, if not years, to see upticks in rankings.

I launched a site in a podcasting niche and got covered by domains such as TechCrunch. Several weeks after covering the coverage, the site ranked at the top of page one for terms related to podcasting.

At that time, I realized the press has power. In the subsequent years, every company I founded received press, which helped them rank higher and faster.

What are your methods for getting press? If you want to pay a PR agency that gets you press, you can do it by using PR Serve, which offers performance-based pay.

By building relationships with reporters, you can get press at a lower cost. To enhance your chances of ultimately getting them interested in covering your company, you should consistently assist them with their stories and give them feedback.

24. Get interviewed

Interviews have proven to be the most effective way to generate links. There’s a good chance that someone will link to your website whenever they interview you. The linked website will usually discuss your story or your business practices, so the links will be highly relevant as well.

Although you may think I have an established brand, I manage to get interviewed quite easily. It wasn’t easy for me in the beginning either, despite your right.

My early entrepreneurial career consisted of me repeatedly emailing two to four bloggers per day who interviewed people in my space to ask them if they wanted to interview me.

My email was ignored or they said no most of the time, but the next time I heard from them, I made sure to provide feedback on their other interviews.

You could share your feedback on Mixergy’s interview with your competitor if it interviewed your competitor. Your response may highlight the positive aspects of the interview as well as the points you disagreed with. To conclude the email, you would have them ask if you would like to appear on the show.

You can expect to get between one and two interviews per week using this method.

25. If links are hard to find, think laterally

Link acquisition is not difficult in certain niches, such as marketing, recipe, and entertainment websites.

You can get links from hundreds of thousands of blogs if you make a strong case.

There just aren’t any blogs in some niches.

Creative thinking is needed then.

Getting links from related niches is a very effective strategy.

Consider the following as related niches if you are a plumber:

  • home DIY
  • home decor
  • beauty/life (e.g., a proper way to unclog sinks or prevent clogs)

If you have expertise in another niche, consider joining it.

Once this is done, all the usual SEO tactics come back into play, such as guest posting and forum posting.

A couple of examples will follow.

Suppose you’re an interior decorator.

The segment of home buying and ownership is related to home decorating, but it has a different audience.

Home decor could enhance your home’s value, so you could write about this. It turns out that this is an excellent long-tail phrase:

Why not make use of it?

A great way to get a link to your website is to create content for your own site and then reach out to homeowner blogs. SEO tactics like that are standard.

If you prefer, you could use the idea for a guest post on a well-known site.

Besides ranking for the long-tail keyword that you target (sending you continuous traffic), it will also send you a lot of immediate referral traffic from the site you post on.

Identify as many related niches as possible, then generate as many ways as possible to add value to each of them.

26. Boring niche? Here’s how to make it more fun

What can you do in a boring niche?

How fun is it to paint a house?

You will probably not be able to succeed in the subject if you think it is boring.

Nevertheless, content can be made at least to be entertaining.

This exact idea was described in Brian Dean’s excellent case study. An SEO agency in New York City run by Mike Bonadio has a client who performs bug control work–boring.

A high-quality infographic he created, however, was on how bugs are beneficial to gardeners. Several prominent blogs have picked up the infographic:

The pest control niche is related to gardening (as we discussed in the previous section).

Mike, however, took it even further by creating a “fun” piece of content.

The benefits of bugs are supposed to make them unfun, but he made them fun through his focus on the fun of them.

By focusing on exciting features and benefits instead of boring elements, you can achieve this in every niche.

Are your driveways sealed, for instance?

Although that may seem dull at first, consider creating content that appears like this:

  • Leonardo DiCaprio’s driveway would require how many gallons of sealant?
  • You will lose money if you choose the wrong driveway sealant: A comparison of the true cost of paving a driveway

The point remains, even if all those things aren’t real. Don’t make the boring parts the main focus; they’re just important elements.

How did it go with the case study?

I’d say extremely well. With the help of over 60 referring domains and hundreds of links, Mike was able to build a following of over 60 sites in that niche:

Further, he received 2,100 views through referral traffic within a short period of time. He still ranks #4 for “exterminators NYC” on his client’s site.

Are you able to interest your customers with your niche? Let me share another example with you that may be more difficult and requires some thinking: Blendtec.

In addition to blenders, Blendtec sells other products as well.

There’s nothing sexy about this product.

It might however be familiar to you from their “Will it Blend?” video. Videos from the “video series.

This video shows the question: “Will it blend?” as they blend a lot of crazy objects, including superglue, apples, and even skeletons.”

The videos they produce are now viewed millions of times.

Those videos receive a lot of links, and those videos link back to Blendtec’s website, giving them a high ranking for blender-related keywords.

27. Diversify your links

The links you can get are diverse, and you can get blog roll links, homepage links, comments on blog posts, directory links, educational links, footer links, etc. Many SEOs tend to build only one of these types of links, rather than all of them.

Link-building methods such as directory links don’t suffice if you want your website to rank high. Links to your site need to come from blogs, directories, and sometimes from other sites’ homepages. Make sure the links you are building are also relevant, as the most powerful links are those that point to valuable content.

In DigiBozz, for example, I have several sites linking to me. The following are examples of links pointing to my site from news sites, sidebar links from popular blogs, blog posts, and educational websites. About half of my monthly traffic from Google is attributable to the diversification of links that are pointing to the site.

28. Get set up on Google Business

SEO is vital for brick-and-mortar establishments, especially since most customers search for local businesses online first.

Setting up a business account on Google is something you should not overlook when it comes to SEO.

Your company’s information can be edited, contact information can be verified, images can be added, and reviews can be monitored.

You can leverage this powerful resource to your advantage over competitors who fail to do so.

29. Find link opportunities on BuzzSumo

You can use BuzzSumo in the same way.

The results will be displayed when you enter a keyword.

“Content marketing” gives me the following:

On any article you are interested in, click “View Sharers”.

An article’s shares will then be listed.

You can form relationships with all of these people, which may eventually lead to options for guest blogging or link-building.

30. Turn a standard post into a long-form post

In regards to ranking, long-form content is greater than, say, a 500-word post of the same length.

That’s already known to you.

You can also take advantage of this content in a very useful way.

The best posts are short, under 1,000 words, that are decent but don’t meet their full potential.

Make it long-form by adding more content, charts, graphs, visuals, etc., until it is truly impressive.

31. Get into Google News

Google pulls news articles for both traditional SERPs as well as the News section of its SERPs.

Think about it this way: Google News may not seem like a traffic source at first glance, but consider what I’m saying. That’s a great source of traffic!

Here’s what it looks like:

You must keep updating your posts regularly, publish honest and cutting-edge articles, and persevere if you want to make it into Google news.

Getting your website listed on the Google News SERP can be done if you are willing to do the following:

  1. Create a “News” section on your blog/website.
    Regularly post news (1-2 posts a day are a good rule of thumb).
  2. Create original, authoritative, and newsworthy content. Consider setting up a Google Alert for the keywords associated with your niche.
  3. How-to and guide articles are not eligible. Posts should always be newsy.
  4. A content aggregate should not be published.
  5. You need to be authoritative in every news article you write.
  6. Links to the author’s profile should appear in the byline, which should contain their contact information and social media profiles.
  7. Start your news section by following Google’s quality guidelines.
  8. For Google News Partner status, you need to subscribe to a paid Google account; a free account does not get you access. The best way to get an email account is to sign up for a Google Apps account. You can get one for as low as $5 a month (https://apps.google.com/pricing.html).
  9. Once you have enough content (at least 50 pages), start publishing and join Google News Partner.

I know that sounds slow, but it’s worth millions!

32. Become an expert in your niche

That seems like a tall order, doesn’t it?

You think it’ll be difficult, but it’s not.

Growing your personal brand can increase your website’s traffic. My personal brand was developed over the course of about a decade. After building that brand, I created several businesses worth millions of dollars using high-converting leads.

The same applies to you. You can do it this way.

Don’t reveal your business secrets and start sharing your knowledge tactfully.

Become a member of a Q&A site such as Quora, Yahoo Answers, or WikiHow. Consider joining LinkedIn groups and writing guest posts or contributing content to niche sites that might benefit from your experience.

Help users by answering their questions. Your website should not be promoted or linked to.

Whenever you answer a user’s question, they will request your help. Whenever help requests come in, it’s time to take action (in a positive way, of course).

As a result, I recommend that you continue to help people, but link to your article or website.

Your site traffic will multiply like crazy if people follow you and browse your link.

Links are liberalized on Yahoo Answers, Linked In, and Quora, but WikiHow has strict policies regarding backlinking, so be cautious. You should always write factual information that is helpful.

33. Influencing the influencers

Despite claims that influencer marketing is dead, I can assure you that adding an influencer’s name to your post will create a tsunami of traffic.

A person who requests that an influencer promote his or her content cannot do so overtly anymore. Why? Because they’ll understand what you want from the moment they see your first line. To be honest, it turns me off.

Every month, content promotion requests are sent to influencers. It’s easy for them to spot one from a distance.

In its place, here are a few suggestions. Make sure the influencer shares your content by influencing and motivating them.

I’ll give you an example of how to do that.

Let me use the keyword phrase “men’s fashion” as my target. Google found plenty of results for “top blogs on men’s fashion.”
