3. Gradients of blue and green on a white background
Payment processing software such as Stripe is popular among eCommerce companies. Stripe needs to stay on top of the latest technological developments as a technology brand. Additionally, the color scheme of their website is trendy as well.
Take a look back six years, back in 2013, at their website before we look at how it looks today:
Does this design have any flaws? It seems dull from the outside. It doesn’t really have much visual appeal.
The company made adjustments, however. Gradients are the latest trend in color palettes. Here’s what you’ll see:
To provide a dynamic background for the white text, this page blends vibrant blues with a bright cyan and a touch of seafoam green.
As Stripe uses a gradient scale to create its background texture, it takes a very simple color of blue and blends it with contrasting tones.
As if by night and day, the 2013 and 2020 sites are quite different. You would have been able to figure out which was newer even without knowing the years they lived.
To update an aging website, add gradients to the color palette to make your website look more modern.
4. Throwback Orange and Red tones
In 2020, we’ll see a huge resurgence of retro color schemes. There are a lot of websites using colors popular in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. However, they are giving them a modern twist.
Their ability to combine retro elements with modern tastes allows them to breathe new life into old trends. The music evokes specific, familiar emotions in their audiences regardless of when they grew up.
The term is somewhat oxymoronic. What is the difference between something retro and something modern?
Here’s what Spotify’s homepage looks like.
This design uses gradient scales to blend the colors and provides a throwback vibe with its warm orange and red tones.
Your target audience can be segmented using generational marketing. Color schemes on your website should be chosen according to the target audience. Women and men have far more to choose from than just pink and blue.
It was decided to use these colors since Spotify knew some of its audience consisted of people who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s. These colors are also trendier and favored by younger generations.
5. Bright pink, soft pink, and black
On its modern—and slightly pink—website, Cowboy sells electric bikes to differentiate its brand. There’s no normal association between the words “cowboy” and “pink”, but I think the website’s sleek and modern design is perfect for the product.
It stands out against the soft pink background and becomes the focal point of the photo. Cowboy Bike nails the trendy and modern color palette by adding brighter pink accents on the page in subtle locations.
Pink is not gender-specific, as Cowboy is used by both men and women. They rather create feelings of fun, trendiness, and social buzz when paired with black.

6. Gray, Soft Yellow, and Deep Blue

We’ve seen a few examples of color palettes on websites so far, but they appear to have a busier tone. Despite this, the trendy design still works well.
The colors yellow, blue, and purple are normally considered difficult to read and difficult to the eyes. They can add brighter contrasting colors to the middle silhouette by using lighter and duller gray tones in the background.

7. Earthy tones with just a touch
Olives from Greece are sold under Konstantopoulos S.A. ‘s “Olymp” label. For its website, earth tones, particularly green shades that resemble olives, are appropriate.
This homepage has a very simple design and layout. Olive green, of course, is the dominant color choice here. The downside is that it’s used a lot sparingly.
An effective, classic color scheme gets a fresh update. It would have been better to use a soft gray background rather than a dense saturation of dark green.
There are leaves in the background that are muted green. The green color makes the text and logo stand out and draws your attention to them.
An earth tones color palette is a fantastic choice for businesses dealing in healthy products, plants, and agriculture. The following color codes will help you achieve the same effect on your website.
Similarly, if your product is recognizable by its color, you can do something similar. Add your accent color sparingly to the lighter gray background and dark gray copy color. Using just two distinctive colors and a complementary accent color, this is a great starting place for simple, non-busy color schemes.
8. Lots of Red, Balanced with Muted Tones
We’ve covered numerous popular website color schemes so far, but there’s been one color that rarely appears: red.
The reason for that is because red makes a powerful but challenging choice for a website. The color red easily draws a reader’s eye, so it might be overwhelming for some. You can add excitement to your website by using it in the right way.
It’s important to remember that you can use red to make seemingly insignificant things pop with color (remember Tareq Ismail’s portfolio in #2?).
Pairing more muted colors with red is another option. The color scheme used here is more sophisticated than what we saw on Tareq’s website.
Five/four’s website featured a splash of bright red color combined with a muted brown and a muted blueish-green.
The muted blue-green here is supporting the red quite well, with the red doing the bulk of the lifting. They would have been far too overwhelming had they chosen to use bright yellow, light blue, and vibrant orange on top of this red color.
Red, however, pairs well with these soft colors. Additionally, this red matches the brand really well. A lot of attention is drawn to the theme of creativity because it’s bright, bold, and attractive.
Alternatively, you can use these color codes with red on your website if you are looking for an eye-catching color scheme.
Keep the red to a minimum. The soft tones should be there to let your page breathe, while still capturing a trendy look.
9. Futuristic Pastels and Primaries
An example of Anton & Irene would round out this list perfectly. Located in New York, these are professional designers. Designing digital products is one of their specialties.
Their pastel and primary paintings were truly a masterclass.
The futuristic feel of this website’s color scheme is one of its best features. Irene and Anton’s outfit choices are a bit out of the ordinary. That’s a risky move, but sometimes the riskiest moves pay off. Flashy combinations are used here without ever becoming gaudy.
Despite having more colors than some of the other examples we have seen so far, the page is not cluttered or ugly. Their clothing styles illustrate this as well: Anton wears contrasting purples and oranges and Irene wears contrasting blues and yellows. The blue and purple opposites are imperfect (orange is blue’s opposite; yellow is purple’s opposite), but they do work together very well.
Consider using different combinations of these exact colors for an artistic twist on your website’s color scheme.
10. Black on Black on Black
The only websites that we have seen that use black at all are sparse ones. Rather than one of the main colors or the background, it is usually reserved for text.
The use of heavy blacks for a website color scheme does not mean you can’t make it more vibrant. When done correctly, it showcases feelings of luxury, class, and professionalism – especially when you use different black tones like these:
Visit the JY BH homepage. As you saw in some of our other examples, combining shades of black gives an effect similar to a gradient. The site looks mysterious and bold thanks to its black gradient.
A French clothing manufacturer, this company sells both men’s and women’s luxury garments and accessories. For web design, black is a timeless color, just like in fashion. In 2020 and beyond, it will remain popular.
You could, however, add depth and texture to your site by using different shades, as seen in the example above. It will appear flat and basic to have only one black color.
It’s 2021. Thus, you need to do away with your old color scheme. Changing colors on your website can impact sales, so it’s important to do so.
By starting with these color palettes, you can create an enjoyable, modern, and unique website. The color codes we showcased can even be applied to your own website.
It doesn’t have to be difficult to choose the right website color palette. Your brand gets a boost when you do it and it draws in new customers and draws in old ones too.
